Guatapé & the Rock of El Peñol

Before you book this one

The 740 steps are steep, narrow and two-way, with no lift and no alternative route to the top. If you have knee, heart or breathing problems, tell us — Guatapé town and the boat are excellent on their own and we will build the day that way. Rock entry is COP 35,000 per person, unified across all seasons since 1 January 2026.

A 220-metre granite monolith with 740 steps zigzagging up its face, and from the top an archipelago of flooded green valleys that looks unreal. Then Guatapé itself, where every building carries a painted zócalo panel.

What you do

  • 740 steps up El Peñol, and the view that justifies them
  • The zócalo panels of Guatapé, painted street by street
  • A boat across the reservoir through the drowned valleys
  • Lunch by the water before the drive back

As a private booking

Private vehicle leaving at 06:00 so you climb the rock before the buses arrive, a private boat instead of the shared launch, and lunch booked rather than queued for.

When to do it

Year round. Weekends and Colombian holidays are extremely busy; a weekday is a different experience.

Practical notes for Medellín

  • How we talk about the 1990s. Medellín was the most dangerous city on earth and is not any more. That transformation is the interesting story, and it belongs to the people who lived it. We do not run narco tours and we do not use that name to sell anything. Many Medellinenses find it genuinely offensive, and our guides will tell you why.
  • The airport is not in the city. MDE sits on a plateau 45–60 minutes away through a mountain tunnel. Budget the time, and expect a 20 °C temperature swing between the terminal and El Poblado.
