Paloquemao Market at Dawn

3 hoursMax 10EasyFamily friendly

Get there at seven, when the flower hall is being restocked and the fruit sellers will cut open anything you point at. The single best hour in Bogotá and almost nobody does it.

What you do

  • The flower hall at its fullest, before the city wakes
  • Twenty-odd fruits tasted, most of them unfamiliar
  • The meat, fish and herb halls
  • A market breakfast: caldo, tamal, hot chocolate with cheese

As a private booking

Private guide and a chef, then a market-to-table cooking class from what you bought.

When to do it

Best 06:30–09:00. By eleven the flower hall is picked over.

Practical notes for Bogotá

  • Altitude is real. At 2,640 m the air holds about a quarter less oxygen than at sea level. Give yourself 24–48 hours before anything strenuous, drink more water than feels necessary, and go easy on alcohol the first night. Altitude sickness is uncommon here but not unheard of.
  • It is colder than you expect. People pack for the Caribbean and shiver. Bogotá sits at 8–19 °C. Bring a warm layer and a rain shell — the weather changes within an hour and the rain is sideways.
