Steep, hot and humid with little shade in places. Go early, carry more water than you expect to need. Requires being on Providencia — see the boat day for access notes.

A hike up through dry tropical forest to the highest point of Providencia at 360 metres, where the whole barrier reef becomes visible at once as a bright ring of colour around the island.

What you do

  • The full barrier reef seen from above, in one view
  • Dry tropical forest, iguanas and endemic birds
  • Blue land crabs on the trail in season
  • A local guide from the community

As a private booking

A private guide, an early start before the heat, and a boat waiting for a swim afterwards.

Practical notes for San Andrés

  • You need a tourist card to fly here. Every visitor buys a Tarjeta de Turismo at the departure airport before boarding — Colombians included. Keep it; you need it to leave. Budget roughly US$30 and confirm the current price when you book.
  • This is Raizal land. The islands have their own Afro-Caribbean Raizal people, language and Baptist church tradition, distinct from mainland Colombia. Residency is legally restricted to protect it. Learn the difference — it is the most interesting thing about the place.
